Day 7: God is Good
Day 7: God is Good
“Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!” - Psalm 107:1
God's goodness is not one attribute but a summation of all his attributes. In Exodus 33, Moses pleads with God to reveal his glory to him. God replies, "I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name 'TheLORD.' And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy" (Ex.33:19). We cannot separate what is good from God himself. (Ps. 16:2) It is fitting then that God is the giver of every good gift (James 1:17) and delights to give his children good gifts (Ps. 84:11).
After healing a deaf man in the region of the Decapolis, the crowd was amazed at what Jesus had done. They said among themselves, "He has done all things well" (Mark 7:37). How fitting a response when considering the work of Jesus? The best way to dwell on God's goodness is to recall all that he is to us and all that he has done for us. He has done all things well in creating us, sustaining us, forgiving us, adopting us, sanctifying us, interceding for us, and sealing us for the day of redemption. How else has he been good to you? Let that stir up your heart with gratitude and worship today!
God's goodness not only leads us to worship, but it should also lead us to repentance (Rom. 2:4), allow us to rest in God in the midst of trials (Ps. 31:19-20), and enable us to step out in faith day by day as we follow of Christ (Ps. 84:11). We reflect God's goodness when we live in the full confidence and joy of all that God is for us. May our lives bear witness to this truth: God is good!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, you are good, very good. Thank you that you chose to bestow your abundant goodness on a sinner like me. Help me to dive deeper into who you are and what you have done for me. Open my eyes to see and enjoy your goodness. I see how foolish my sin is in light of your goodness. Thank you for your kindness to me. I turn from my selfishness and sin. As I go about my day, help me rest in your goodness no matter what comes my way. Remind me that you have promised to withhold no good thing for those who walk upright. You get to determine what is good. I trust that you are the giver of every good gift that comes my way—no matter what form it may take.
