Jesus and Sinners - Mark 2:1-17
This week in our Mark sermon series, we focused on Mark 2:1-17. This passage clearly shows Jesus' response to sin and sinners. We see the contrast between Jesus' response to those who come to him in faith and those who do not. Jesus shows his power and authority over sin and his deep mercy and love for sinners. We see Jesus respond to the faith of the paralytic and his friends with forgiveness of sins, but Jesus responds to the scribes with a rebuke. Jesus forgives sinners who come to Him by faith.
Mark 2:17 says "And when Jesus heard it, he said to them 'Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.'" Jesus came not to save those who think they are righteous but those who know they are sinners. He offers salvation to anyone who comes to him in faith, knowing they are sinners in need of him.
He also uses sinners who humbly follow him. Jesus calls even the tax collectors to follow him. If they do, He offers them salvation and even uses them. In the kingdom of God, it is not your past sin that determines your usefulness to God, but your present faith and submission to Him.
