The Parable of the Tenants - Mark 12:1-12

Have you ever felt stunned or amazed by something wonderful? Have you ever tried to describe something so incredible that no words seemed right? When we consider God’s plan of salvation, it’s hard not to be overcome with a jaw-dropping sense of awe and wonder.

Jesus’ parable in Mark 12:1-12 highlights something absolutely stunning about the Gospel. Jesus reveals that God’s plan of salvation is accomplished through the rejection of His Son. Jesus knew that sinners would soon crucify Him. What was about to go down would be the most heinous crime of all time. The religious leaders were going to willingly and wickedly arrest Jesus. What is so astonishing is that their rejection of Jesus fulfilled God’s sovereign plan and purpose (Isaiah 53:10).

Through the death of His Son, God turns something heinous into something glorious. Because His Son was rejected, we can be received as His sons and daughters (John 1:12). Because the Prince of Peace was crucified, we can become citizens of heaven (Ephesians 2:19). Because Jesus gave Himself for us, we are together built up as a holy temple for Him (Ephesians 2:20-21). What a glorious, jaw-dropping revelation!

The beauty and wonder of the Gospel should never cease to amaze us. Are you as amazed by the Gospel as when you first believed it? Do you still delight in God’s story, or has familiarity calloused your heart? If we are honest, our awe and wonder tend to fluctuate. If your delight is dwindling, pray as David did. Ask God to restore the joy of His salvation within you (Psalm 51:12). If your delight is full, don’t keep it to yourself. Declare the incredible Gospel that you delight in so others can experience the joy you’ve found.
