The Third Commandment - Exodus 20:7
The Law of God | Exodus 20:7
We have been working through a series on the 10 Commandments entitled "The Law of God." The Law is central to understanding the message of the Bible and good news of the gospel. The Law reflects the character of God, reveals our need for the gospel, and points to how the Christian can walk in obedience. This week the sermon focused on the third commandment: "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain." - Exodus 20:7
You might ask yourself: "what's so bad about saying the Lord's name in vain?"
First, we have to understand what a name does. A name reveals a person. A name isn't just something that we call one another by, but it displays who the person is in character and reputation. This concept of a name is vital when we think about what it means to take God's name in vain.
If we know the depth of meaning in God's name, we understand the depth of taking the Lord's name in vain. God's name reveals his essence, presence, glory, and character. We know God because of who He has shown himself to be in His name.
We take God's name in vain when we add it to our promises to make them more credible when we speak about God without the reverence that His name calls for, and the lives we live, whether in line with His word.
