Day 13: God is Truthful

Day 13: God is Truthful

This God—his way is perfect; the word of the LORD proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. - Psalm 18:30

God is truth. He does not just tell the truth or know the truth; He is Himself the source and essence of truth. For something to be true means that it accords with reality. Therefore, it is God who defines reality. All truth is God's truth. We cannot put our personal pronouns before the truth as if it is relative or subjective to our sentiments. Truth must be measured not against ourselves but against God. In a day of competing truth claims, we can take comfort that our God is true and the source of truth.

To say that God is truthful is to also say that He is the one and only true God. There is none besides Him. All other gods are false gods. As the one and only true God, He will not share His glory with another (Isa. 42:8). If it were up to us to discover the truth on our own, we would be lost. God has revealed Himself. He created a world in such a way that it can be understood by observation and examination. (i.e., general revelation) However, He has most fully revealed Himself through the Living Word—Jesus Christ—and the written Word. (i.e., special revelation—Heb. 1:1-4; John 17:17) Because God is true, we can trust in His Son and submit to His Word.

Honesty and truth are more valuable than ever before, whether you are considering where you get your news from or who you consider your friend. As God's people, we are called to walk in the truth. (2 John 1:4). This means we need to ground ourselves in God's Word, but it also calls us to be discerning in what we listen to and what we believe. (Prov 13:5) In the church, God calls us to cultivate community by being people who speak the truth in love to one another—the truth that is found in Jesus (Eph. 4:15, 20). It's worth asking, how are you doing at walking in the truth?

Prayer

Father, you are the one and only true God. I praise you because I wouldn't have seen this for myself. I need you to open my eyes. I still need you to help me to discern what is true every day and to walk in the truth. I not only want to be honest, but I want to speak the truth that is found in Jesus with other believers and with those who do not yet know you. I see how so many are looking for truth; may you use me to point them to you.
