Day 5: God is Holy

Day 5: God is Holy

"As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy." - 1 Peter 1:14-16

To be Holy is to be morally blameless, set apart, and sacred. God is holy. There is no one like God. He alone is holy. All that He does is good, righteous, and just. He can only do what is right because that is what it means to be holy. There is no stain or spot, or blemish in God. There is nothing evil in God. He is altogether good. He is Holy.

Because God is holy, He calls His people to be holy. The fact that God must command us to be holy points to our lack of holiness. We are, by nature, unholy. How are we to be like God in His holiness? Jesus. Is it not Jesus that provides our holiness? God himself imparts his holiness on us through the work of His Son Jesus. Now holiness is Christ in me. I am holy because He is holy.

It is now through Christ's work on the cross that God's Spirit empowers us to live out of our new nature that reflects God's holiness. We can live out a holy life reflective of God's character because of the finished work of Christ and His Spirit living inside of us.

Prayer

Father, I pray that you would help me rejoice in your holiness today. Help me to delight in your righteousness, goodness, and justice. Remind me that there is no one like you. You alone are holy and altogether good. Thank you that you make me holy like you through Jesus' work on the cross. I pray that today and every day, I would by your Spirit walk in obedience to your word that I might be holy as you are holy.
