14 Days of Prayer - Day 3: God is Omniscient

Day 3: God is Omniscient

Who has measured the Spirit of the LORD, or what man shows him his counsel? Whom did he consult, and who made him understand? Who taught him the path of justice, and taught him knowledge, and showed him the way of understanding? - Isaiah 40:13–14

To say God is omniscient is to say he sees and knows all things. He searches our hearts and knows our ways, even if we'd like to think they are hidden from him. (Job 31:4; Jer. 16:17). As the psalmist says, "Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it." (Psalm 139:6). As with most of God's attributes, we understand them in relation to each other. God not only knows all things (omniscient), but He is control of all things (sovereign). Unbound by time (eternity),he knows past, present, and future (omniscience).

God's omniscience reminds us that while we can hide our sin from others, it is laid bare before God. This should provoke us to repentance and motivate us towards obedience. With God, we should not pretend, and we must not pridefully conceal our sin before Him. Yet, we should take great comfort in this attribute of God, because the One who knows us best loves us most. What a glorious thought! He knows the worst about us, and He still choses to demonstrate His love for us on the cross. It should also comfort us that God not only knows the worst about us, but He knows the best about us, even when others don't see it or assume the worst of us.

Prayer

Father, you know all things, even me. Your ways are higher than my ways. Your thoughts are higher than my thoughts. Forgive me for the times I've concealed my sin or for the times I thought you couldn't see me in my difficult circumstances. You knew, and you always know. I rejoice that you love me though you know the worst about me. Help me remember that when my past sin rears its ugly head and tempts me to think you don't love me. Remind me of the cross, where you demonstrated your love for me. Even if no one else sees or knows of my attempts to walk in obedience to you, I delight in knowing that You see and You know.
